Trap

Walking towards the bridge, At around 20 steps she stopped. Looking at the sky filled with twinkling stars, her eyes filled with tears. To whatever little life Naina has lived tears were an emotion she could never feel. Slowly, she clenched the pendant hanging around her neck and closed her eyes, teardrops rolled down her cheeks and a sense of relief burst into her body.

She felt liberated, everything around her made her feel calm. As if the mission of her life was completed. Not much longer than she started to process her feelings when suddenly, a hand approached her shoulder. And as she turned around she turned cold as death.

Unable to believe her eyes she touched the face standing before her. Looking at her it seemed she knew the man. The man  questioned, “What are you doing here, Naina?” Naina almost lost her consciousness, she struggled hard to catch her breath. While the man standing before her softly tucked her hair behind the ears and closely whispered in her ears “Didn’t you expect me ?”.Gaining consciousness, she pushed the man away from her and ran back towards the road she came from. The more she ran, the more her eyes cried. Amidst, all that was happening she couldn’t let her grip from her sharp emerald pendant.

It was impossible to decide whether her heart raced faster or her legs. After running for quite a while she reached the garden. The garden that signified her entire childhood, her innocence. It was the place of death and rebirth from the soft delicate flower into a succulent cactus. Hurriedly, she rushed towards a newly planted sapling. She unrooted the sapling and using a shovel she started digging the wet soil.

Without resting for a minute, she continually kept digging until a pale yellow piece of cloth was visible. She cleaned the mud of the man’s face. His face was covered with bloodstains. A sharp cut on his forehead explained the cause of his death. Naina couldn’t believe that her actions can’t be undone. She saw the man lying on the ground, in the pale yellow shirt soaked in blood. Her body started losing her strength. She collapsed on the ground and wailed a loud cry.

The agony in her cry was the suppressed anger and suffocation from years of physical and mental torture. She sat beside the man, recalling all the moments spent with him who was none other than his beloved brother. A brother who preyed on her body and soul, sucking all the life from and within her… leaving her eyes and mind dried for years until today when mustered courage to stand up for herself.

Unfortunately, leaving her no choice she accidentally murdered him with the very gift given by him – the cold emotions and a pendant. She decided to keep the symbol of her freedom close to her heart and thus, she wore that emerald pendant stained with blood. Naina thought maybe now his wiped existence may wipe away the enormous humiliation and pain that he has caused in her life. Unfortunately, she was trapped in his haunts for an eternity !!!
